Park “smart” maps now available for Kalbarri

The Smart Park mapping program initiated by the WA Parks Foundation has taken another step forward with the launching of three maps to help maximise the experience of a visit to Kalbarri National Park.

Home to the recently opened Kalbarri Skywalk, this spectacular national park 485km north of Perth is the most recent location to be made available on the Avenza app. This follows the piloting of the program with four maps developed for the ruggedly beautiful Karijini National Park in the Pilbara region.

The Smart Park Maps use built-in GPS on smart phone or tablet to plot real-time locations within the park. Both the app and the maps are free to download and providing the maps are downloaded while there is a network connection, they can be used real-time in the parks without a network connection and without roaming charges.

The maps include information on camping and picnic areas, lookouts, parking, swimming, toilets, walk trails and their classifications, wheelchair access, Wi-Fi, roads, tracks and safety information.

The ‘Smart’ Park Maps series, sponsored by BHP, is delivered by the WA Parks Foundation in partnership with the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions.

WA Parks Foundation Chair, the Hon Kerry Sanderson AC CVO said the Smart Park mapping program was designed to make it easier for people to prepare for their visits to national parks and to navigate their way around, offline and in real time.

“Encouraging people to experience and enjoy our amazing national parks is one of the main aims of the Foundation, she said.

“Twenty of the State’s most popular parks have been prioritised for mapping, and the support of maps developer and custodian DBCA and sponsorship by corporate partner BHP is greatly appreciated.”
