Explore: Discover the River Journeys project at Point Walter Reserve

Point Walter spit is an important site for waterbirds using the Swan River. As well as a feeding and resting place for many birds, the furthest end of the spit is an important nesting site for a variety of bird species. This area is of great significance to the Whadjuk Noongar people as it holds the story of Djunda the Charnock woman, a spirit woman who collected spirit children and placed them in her long white hair. Her hair is now the Milky Way and the stars are the children she collected. On her way up to the sky, some of Djunda’s long white hairs fell into the river, forming the Point Walter spit. This is also a good place to do the Jenna Biddi Yorga trail towards Bicton Baths– a 2.1km trail through the Point Walter Reserve with 10 points of interest, and part of the Riverpark Trail along Melville Water.
