Explore Bold Park’s Springtime Beauty
Bold Park is a 437-hectare urban bushland reserve, offering a unique environment rich in biodiversity. As the weather warms up in September, the park comes alive with a spectacular display of wildflowers, including many species of orchids that are in full bloom. This is the perfect time to see the park’s flora at its most vibrant, with the vivid colors and delicate shapes of the wildflowers creating a stunning contrast against the bushland backdrop.
But it’s not just the flowers that draw visitors to Bold Park in September. Reptiles, such as bobtail lizards, begin to emerge from their winter retreats, basking in the increasing sunlight. This surge in activity provides ample food for the park’s birdlife, making it an excellent time to observe birds in their natural habitat. From honeyeaters feeding on flowers to fantails and pardalotes hunting for insects, and even goshawks soaring high in search of larger prey, Bold Park is teeming with life during this season.
Guided Walks with the Friends of Bold Park Bushland
The Friends of Bold Park Bushland volunteer guides are passionate about the park and its ecosystems. On these walks, they will share their extensive knowledge of the area, helping you to identify the different species of wildflowers, reptiles, and birds that call Bold Park home. Each walk is approximately 1.5 hours long and is graded as moderate, with some steeper sections. This makes the walk accessible to most visitors, though it is not suitable for wheelchairs or prams.
Preparing for Your Walk
To fully enjoy your experience, it’s important to come prepared. Wear sturdy, closed-in shoes suitable for walking on uneven terrain, and dress for the weather with a hat and drinking water. Please note that there are no toilet facilities in Bold Park; the nearest amenities are located at Perry Lakes Reserve.
These guided walks are free, and bookings are generally not required for individuals. However, if you are planning to attend with a group of more than ten people, it’s recommended that you contact the Friends of Bold Park Bushland in advance. The walks will proceed in most weather conditions, so be sure to check the notices section for any potential cancellations or changes due to extreme weather.
