Adorable koalas settling in at Yanchep
Yanchep National Park, about 50 kms north of the Perth CBD, is home to three new koalas.Â
The newcomers are Miffy, a seven-year-old female from Ballarat Wildlife Park in Victoria, and 18-month-old brothers Louie and Franklin Doogsie, from South Australia’s Cleland Wildlife Park.Â
They have joined the park’s existing residents, 19-year-old Kate and 14-year-old Koodah, who are descended from koalas brought to Yanchep National Park from South Australia in the late-1980s.Â
Perth Zoo vets assisted the new arrivals throughout a quarantine period, and visitors are able to view the koalas from 8am to 4.30pm every day from a boardwalk that winds through a carefully managed habitat.Â
Yanchep National Park has a diverse range of flora and fauna, providing habitat for several species of native mammal, including the quenda, western grey kangaroo, and black-glove wallaby. Â
Koalas inhabit eucalypt forests and woodlands in eastern Australia from north Queensland through to south-east South Australia. They were introduced to Yanchep National Park in 1938.Â
