Feature Event: Mount Magnet Astro Rocks Fest
From ancient Aboriginal observations to futuristic radio astronomy projects in the Murchison GeoRegion, the Mount Magnet Astro Rocks Fest is a weekend event that celebrates the importance of astronomy and rocks.
Family-friendly, this three-day event observes, informs and educates visitors about the ancient land, cultural connections (particularly with local Badimia people), the associated biodiversity and the vastness of the night sky.
Astro Rocks Fest connects people to the night sky, through an astrofest evening with displays, space dome (planetarium) night sky tours, Scitech science shows and a range of telescopes focusing on different parts of the night sky with astronomers on hand to help you explore the universe. Astronomy talks include the remarkable Square Kilometre Array.
There will be presentations by experts in the fields of geology including associated biodiversity and cultural aspects. They will offer rare insights into the unique Murchison Geo Region and field trips to geo sites for those who wish to discover more.
Workshops include Astrophotography, lapidary and gold detecting. There are Ramelius Minesite and cultural site bus tours, Down to Earth Markets, a rock climbing wall and live reptile displays.
Exhibitions include Wirnda Barna Artists canvas artwork, quilt art, landscape photography, astrophotography and pottery with many artworks for sale. There will be a festival film in the outdoor cinema under the stars.
Astro Rocks Fest is sponsored by Shire of Mount Magnet, with major sponsors Lotterywest, Tourism WA and Horizon Power.
