World Migratory Bird Day Event

Every Spring-Summer, around 37 species of shorebirds migrate to Australia, seeking refuge from the harsh northern hemisphere winters. They stop in Australia’s coastal and freshwater wetlands to rest and feed, building the energy reserves needed for their return flight in April. With some of these birds listed as ‘Critically Endangered,’ their protection during their stopover in Perth is crucial.

To raise awareness and provide an opportunity to learn more, a World Migratory Bird Day event has been organized. Participants will have the chance to join birdwatching walks led by experienced birders at 8:30am and 9am, with the latter walk focusing on bird photography and ethical practices. Each walk is limited to 15 participants on a first-come, first-served basis.

Educational stalls hosted by River Guardians, Friends of Melville Bird Sanctuary, Birdlife, and SERAG (Swan Estuary Reserves Action Group) will offer further insight into the lives of these remarkable birds. There will also be fun activities for children, including colouring, crafts, and a scavenger hunt. Prizes will be available, and light refreshments will be provided by the City of Melville.

This event is a collaborative effort between Friends of Melville Bird Sanctuary, River Guardians, the City of Melville, Birdlife, and SERAG. For more information, contact community@dbca.wa.gov.au.
