Wondering at our dark skies
Country WA has some of the best dark skies in the world and evenings with little to no moon in the night sky are ideal, when the darkness showcases the Milky Way in all its glory.
The darkness also provides opportunities to see faint objects such as the stunning Magellanic Clouds, nearby galaxies that can be seen with the naked eye, plus far-off galaxies and gaseous nebulae, clearly seen through telescopes.
Evenings with a brighter moon add a different flavour to a stargazing experience, says Astro tourism events operator Startracks Astro Events, winner of a Bronze Award in the Heritage and Cultural category of the Tourism Council of Western Australia’s 2025 Tourism Awards.
Coming up on Startracks Astro Events and Astrotourism WA’s cosmic line up of stargazing treats is the supermoon from 7.57 pm on 5 December. The Geminids Meteor Shower, is active from 4 to 17th December, peaking from 11pm on 14 December with viewing from the north- east and north.
