Dr Kit Prendergast wins Early‑Career Scientist of the Year

The Premier’s Science Awards marked their 25th anniversary in 2026, celebrating excellence in scientific research, education and engagement across Western Australia. Among this year’s distinguished recipients was native bee scientist and conservation advocate Dr Kit Prendergast, awarded Early‑Career Scientist of the Year for her contributions to biodiversity research and community engagement.

For Dr Prendergast, the honour carries special significance. Her career has never followed a traditional academic pathway. Instead, she has carved out a niche as an independent scientist working across Western Australia in roles that span research, education, citizen science, ecological assessment and community outreach.

Over the years, Dr Prendergast has surveyed native bees in Indigenous Protected Areas at Walyarta, investigated pollinators of critically endangered flora in the Goldfields, led bushfire recovery projects under Federal Government grants, visited schools and community groups, spoken at gardening events, and conducted biodiversity assessments for environmental consultants, Friends groups and local governments. She has also collaborated with Greening Australia to support pollination in native seed production areas.
