Have your say on whale shark management at Ningaloo
Public consultation is now open on a draft program to guide whale shark tourism and interactions in Ningaloo Marine Park over the next decade.
The State Government is seeking community feedback on the draft 2026 Whale Shark Management Program, following a review of the existing 2013 program.
The review found that whale shark interaction tours are being managed sustainably and to a world-class standard, based on available literature and data.
Developed following consultation with tourism operators, conservation groups and the scientific community, the revised program aims to ensure interactions with whale sharks remain safe and sustainable while supporting conservation and a quality visitor experience.
Ningaloo Marine Park is internationally renowned for its seasonal whale shark aggregations, offering visitors the opportunity to swim alongside the world’s largest fish in their natural environment.
More than 41,000 visitors enjoyed whale shark experiences at Ningaloo on tours in 2025.
Whale sharks are Western Australia’s marine animal emblem and are protected under Commonwealth and State legislation.
The eight-week public consultation period is open until 21 December 2026. Community members are encouraged to review the draft program and provide feedback to help shape the future management of whale shark interactions at Ningaloo.
The revised program will guide management over the next decade, with a focus on visitor safety, animal welfare, sustainable tourism and positive conservation outcomes.
Your feedback can help protect these gentle giants while supporting a world-class wildlife experience at Ningaloo.
