Seaweed, Seagrass and Shorebirds: How Beach Wrack is a Beach Buffet 

The Great Southern Reef is a phenomenon in a low-nutrient ocean, thriving by using recovered nutrients from decomposed organic material to feed a myriad of seaweeds, extensive seagrass beds, and aquatic animals. The beach wrack you will find on many of Esperance’s beaches is actually a sign this ecosystem is healthy – even when it smells like compost when it warms in the sun! The seagrasses, algae and other marine fibres that accrue at the shorelines, sometimes into huge mounds, act like a beach buffet for shorebirds due to some fascinating, and somewhat stinky secrets!
