Walpole tourism operator recognised for Excellence in Tourism
Walpole tourism pioneer Gary Muir from WOW Wilderness has been honoured with the Local Tourism Legend Award at the recent WA Tourism Conference, recognising his outstanding contribution to Western Australia’s tourism industry.
The award acknowledges individuals who have made an exceptional and enduring impact on tourism in their region. Gary was recognised for more than three decades of dedication to building one of the South West’s most iconic tourism experiences through entrepreneurial leadership, environmental stewardship and a deep commitment to the local community.
A sixth-generation member of the Muir family, whose ancestors helped first settle WA’s south-west wilderness and the Eucla region, Gary’s connection to the natural environment runs deep. He was among the first Conservation Officers appointed to the then newly formed Department of Conservation and Land Management, dedicating more than a decade to the management of forests, parks and reserves across Western Australia.
Building on this foundation, Gary established WOW Wilderness as a leading ecotourism operation in the heart of the Walpole Wilderness. Through his guided experiences, he has introduced thousands of visitors to the spectacular Walpole and Nornalup Inlets Marine Park and WA’s first wilderness zone within Walpole-Nornalup National Park.
Gary’s commitment to conservation and visitor education extends beyond his business. As a WA Parks ambassador, he continues to share his knowledge and passion for Western Australia’s natural landscapes, inspiring visitors and locals alike to appreciate and protect the state’s environmental and cultural heritage.
