Feature park: Two Peoples Bay
When an American whaling ship lay anchor in a bay 35km east of Albany in 1803 at the same time a French vessel was exploring the same coastline, it seemed only fitting to call the sheltered waters Two Peoples Bay after their chance meeting.
Partly sheltered from the Southern Ocean by the granite massifs of Mt Gardner and Mt Manypeaks, the bay was a gathering place for the local Indigenous Noongar people, known as the Minang, who hunted and fished along streams that fed into the bay.
The bay was declared a nature reserve in the 1967 and is internationally renowned as the site where the presumed extinct noisy scrub bird and Gilbert’s potoroo were rediscovered.
Walk trails in Two Peoples Bay Nature Reserve start from the visitor centre and from Little Beach, offering expansive views of the bay and of Mt Manypeaks. Fishing and swimming is popular, boats can be launched from the beach and four-wheel-drive opportunities exist for experienced off-road drivers with high clearance vehicles.
