Message from our Chair

Hon Kerry Sanderson AC CVO,        Chair WA Parks Foundation

As we head into Christmas and the New Year I want to thank you for your support of the WA Parks Foundation over the past 12 months.

2021 has been a challenging year, but it has led to more Western Australians visiting our natural areas and appreciating what they have to offer. That is great because one of our main aims is to connect more people to Western Australia’s magnificent parks and reserves, including marine parks. Increasing understanding of the importance of our wonderful parks through increased visitation or connectivity continues to be a strategic focus.

In that regard, Spring into Parks, supported this year by Lotterywest, offered many and varied opportunities for getting out into nature. Supporting and promoting the mental and physical benefits of spending time in the great outdoors through this very successful, targeted campaign is also helping to build our government, community and corporate networks.

We’re also very proud of progress made on our mapping project which provides details of the trails and facilities in major national parks through a free mobile phone app. Supported to date by BHP and delivered in partnership with the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions (DBCA), Smartreka maps are now available for nine national parks, and we hope to deliver more.

The complementary Park Guide, also on our website, provides up to date information on more than 900 sites and campgrounds as well as the parks in which they are situated.  Inclusion of this comprehensive database has been possible through an agreement between the WA Parks Foundation, DBCA, Scoop Digital and Localista.

Supporting wildlife conservation is an important aim, and as an example initial planning research has been undertaken on a potential quokka rewilding project in the State’s South West. This project is supported by the Wright Burt Foundation and in partnership with the Kaitijin Mia Mia Aboriginal Foundation

We look forward to working with our Park Ambassadors and members, and with our community, government and corporate partners in 2022.

Thank you again for your support and best wishes to you and your families and friends for Christmas and for an enjoyable and safe holiday season.
