Midwest conservation partnership strengthens conservation outcomes
A new three-year conservation partnership has been launched to support biodiversity and protect threatened species in the Watheroo region, approximately 200 kilometres north of Perth.
The Watheroo Region Conservation Program brings together the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions (DBCA) and Woodside Energy to deliver coordinated, landscape-scale conservation across an area recognised for its significant flora, fauna and ecological communities.
Building on previous collaborative work, the program will initially focus on managing invasive predators to help protect vulnerable species including malleefowl, bush stone-curlew, dunnarts and sand goanna populations across Watheroo National Park and neighbouring nature reserves.
The partnership will also contribute to the recovery of priority threatened ecological communities, including banksia woodlands, through on-ground conservation actions, monitoring and habitat management.
By working across property boundaries and aligning land management efforts, the program aims to strengthen ecological resilience and deliver long-term conservation benefits for one of Western Australia’s important natural landscapes.
